Derek Lowe gets DUI

In late April 2011, at 10:00 at night, Atlanta police officers pulled over the 2011 Porsche of Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Derek Lowe, age 37, for racing another car on Peachtree Road in Atlanta. Mr. Lowe has been charged with DUI, improper lane change, and reckless driving. He issued a statement saying that he hopes the court system can resolve his DUI case quickly.

Upon pulling over Mr. Lowe's vehicle, Atlanta officers noticed the odor of alcohol on Lowe's breath. They asked him to comply with some field sobriety tests which generally include the horizontal gaze nystagmus, walk and turn, and one leg stand. The officers then asked Mr. Lowe to submit to breathalyzer. Lowe allegedly refused to submit to such a chemical test. A refusal of a breath test can potentially cause a one year suspension of your Georgia drivers license. A conviction for DUI can lead to up to one year in jail, among other consequences. Mr. Lowe was taken to the City of Atlanta jail and bonded out the following morning.
